The first and most basic method I used to help me understand and retain the reading was to put myself in a situation where I could focus on reading and reduce any distractions around me. I would first have the space around me quite and comfortable, usually sitting on my couch with a snack and a glass of water. Having things like food and water close by forced me to sit and read otherwise I would become distracted and look for things to do other than my homework.
